Deep in northwestern Maine, the 490 Road runs near the Saint John Ponds, headwaters of the great Saint John River. It's a private, unpaved route built and maintained by lumbermen.
And so, this is my route to begin the greatest canoe trip in the East: the upper Saint John River.
